The Greenbelt Alliance was founded by Dorothy Ward Erskine (1896-1982) in 1959 as the Citizens for Regional Recreation and Parks to protect parks and recreational areas in the San Francisco Bay Area. Initially focused on preserving existing recreational areas the organization was renamed People for Open Space in 1969 to reflect a new commitment to preserving additional space such as ranch lands, agricultural lands and wildlife preserves. In 1976 People for Open Space adopted the goal of establishing a permanent regional greenbelt. In 1984 they established the Greenbelt Congress as a parallel group fighting for open space, the two organizations merged in 1987 to form the Greenbelt Alliance with a focus on both grassroots activism and policy research.
Future additions are expected.
